Ethical Implications of Green Certification Mandates
- 1 PDH Credit
Engineers are increasingly expected to deliver sustainability certifications that, while labeled “voluntary,” become essential through laws, contracts, and funding requirements. This course examines the ethical responsibilities engineers face when environmental goals intersect with cost, client priorities, and public safety. Participants will review key updates in LEED v4.1, ASHRAE standards, and IBC 2024, and learn how to navigate conflicts between compliance frameworks and engineering judgment. Through real-world scenarios, learners will practice applying professional ethics to design decisions, ensuring truthful documentation, responsible certification practices, and unwavering protection of public health, safety, and welfare in sustainability-driven projects.
Identify and describe key updates in LEED v4.1, ASHRAE standards, and IBC 2024 relevant to engineering ethics.
Evaluate ethical dilemmas that arise when building codes or green certifications conflict with client directives or cost constraints.
Apply NSPE Code of Ethics principles to real-world design and construction scenarios involving sustainability mandates.
Analyze the engineer’s role in safeguarding public health, safety, and welfare amid emerging environmental regulations.
