FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the California Supplemental Exam (CSE)?

The California Supplemental Exam (CSE) is a state-specific licensing exam administered by the California Architects Board (CAB). It tests candidates on California-specific codes, regulations, and the practice of architecture in the state — knowledge not fully covered by the ARE, including California's Coastal Act, CEQA, DSA/HCAI oversight, and CA accessibility and green-building codes.

Who has to take it?

Any architect seeking licensure in California must pass the CSE — including candidates completing the ARE and licensed architects from other states pursuing California licensure through reciprocity.

Can I take the CSE before the Architect Registration Examination (ARE)?

You can, but it's not recommended. Most candidates will reach licensure faster by completing the ARE first. The CSE assumes ARE-level competency and builds on it, so the typical path is ARE to CSE.

What is the CSE exam like?

The CSE is 100 scored multiple-choice questions plus roughly 25–30 unscored pretest questions, completed in approximately 3.5 hours. There are no drawings, case studies, reference sheets, or calculations. It's simpler in form and structure than any single ARE division, but more rigorous than the open-book supplemental exams required in some other states.

What does the CSE cover?

The CSE covers California-specific content, including Title 24 — the California Building Standards Code, California's permitting processes, complex building considerations unique to the state, and the roles and responsibilities of a licensed California architect — all aligned with the official CSE Test Plan.

How long should I study for the CSE?

Study time varies depending on your California practice experience and how recently you completed the ARE.

What happens if I pass? What if I don't?

You'll receive a score report at the test center immediately after completing the exam. If you don't pass, you'll need to submit a new Application for CSE and fee to CAB, then wait a minimum of 90 days before retesting. If you pass and have completed your ARE and AXP requirements, you'll submit fingerprints for a background check (6–8 weeks), then your Application for Licensure through CAB's Connect Portal (4–6 weeks). Once CAB issues your license, you're a licensed architect in California.

Is CSE Prep included in the firm license?

Yes — Amber Book's CSE Prep comes standard with every firm ARE Prep license at no additional cost.
