Critical Dimensions of Accessible Routes: Parking & Signage

Course description

This course looks at the accessibility requirements for parking facilities and signage systems as outlined in the 2017 ICC A117.1 Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities and the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Participants will learn how to calculate the minimum number of accessible parking spaces required for different facility types, understand the technical specifications for accessible and van-accessible parking spaces, and apply best practices for emerging technologies like EV charging stations. Additionally, participants will gain an overview of communication elements and features that support individuals with hearing or vision impairments. This course equips architects and design professionals with the knowledge to design parking infrastructure and way finding systems that comply with current accessibility standards.

• Understand the design criteria of parking lots and structures that can accommodate van-accessible routes and parking spaces.

• Conceptualize the requirements for on-street parking accessibility, including proper placement relative to curb cuts and intersections.
